Massive fire engulfs flat as casualty discovered by rescue crews in burning accommodation

An injured resident was rescued from a burning flat after a huge fire broke out at a sheltered accommodation

Emergency services were called to Patricia Court, on Albion Street in St Helens, shortly before 1pm on Sunday after reports of smoke coming from a first floor flat.

The flat inside the building was engulfed with fire before fire crews arrived just minutes later.

Six fire fighters entered the flat after reports that a person was still inside and later brought someone out to waiting paramedics.

Other people in the neighbouring flats were quickly evacuated from the building.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said that the condition of the person in the flat could not be confirmed.

In a statement, the fire service said: "Fire crews have been called to a serious fire at a first floor flat in Patricia Court, Albion St., St Helens this afternoon.

"Crews were alerted at 12.48pm and on scene at 12.53pm. Three fire engines are in attendance.

"Three teams of two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat and began searching the property while extinguishing the fire with a high pressure hose reel jet.

"Crews discovered a casualty in the flat and continued searching for any other possible occupants.

"North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance and provided treatment to the casualty, fire crews assisted.

"The condition of the casualty cannot be confirmed at this time.

"The fire was extinguished by 1.35pm and the flat has been ventilated using fans.

"Other flats in the vicinity have been evacuated."
