Explosions as car sales firm in Clydach goes up in flames at 2am

A dozen vehicles went up in flames after a large fire at a car sales business in the Swansea Valley.

The incident in Clydach in the early hours of Monday morning left twelve cars burned out shells.

Fire crews from four stations fought the blaze after being called to the site on Pontardawe Road shortly before 2am.

The incident came just hours after another car was apparently torched on a nearby residential street, although the incidents aren’t believed to be connected.

Clydach councillor Paulette Smith said the gates of the compound had been rammed to gain entry, and added the fire service had not used foam during the fire fight, due to proximity of domestic properties.

She added: “Like all residents I am also concerned about a number of anti social and other incidents which have occurred in the village recently.

“The car sales fire is frightening for local residents, and hopefully it’s an isolated incident.”

Three hours before fire at the car sales site, a single car was also subject to a car fire.

The vehicle was parked in Tan y Coed Road, Clydach, when emergency services received a call just before 11pm.

It was completely destroyed by fire, with fire fighters from Morriston attending.

Police also attended, and the emergency service left by 11.30pm.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We were called at 1.55am this morning to reports of a number of cars being set alight in Pontardawe Road.

“Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information should contact 101 or Crimestoppers quoting occurrence 1900361059”

He added: "We were also called to reports of a car being on fire at Tanycoed Road at around 11pm last night.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation".
