Massive clean-up operation underway ahead of Liverpool victory parade

A massive clean-up operation swung into action in the city centre this morning following .

Street cleaning teams battled against mountains of discarded takeaway trays and bottles to get the streets clean in readiness for this afternoon's .

As daylight broke this morning, there were still small knots of Liverpool fans on the streets celebrating the result.

One said: "It was the best night ever. It's been such a long time since we last won the Champions League ."

Victoria Street, Temple Court, Mathew Street and Bold Street were the areas where the biggest clean-up operation took place.

Seagulls gathered in the areas where there was the most discarded fast food, while bottles and empty glasses were still lined up on ledges outside city centre bars.

Meanwhile, Concert Square - which yesterday was a sea of humanity - was deserted except for a clean-up gang.

Liverpool City Council put out a tweet thanking its street cleaning teams, and appealing to people attending this afternoon's LFC parade to take their rubbish home with them or put it in a bin.

However, no sooner had last night's fans began to fade away before they were replaced by a fresh contingent heading into town in readiness for today's victory celebrations.
