Massive chicken wing festival Wing Fest is coming to Bristol in 2020

It would be fair to say Bristolians enjoy a good food festival.

Over the years the city has welcomed countless events which have honoured various different food types and next year there will be yet another one to sink our teeth into.

Taking place in the 5,000-capacity Lloyds Amphitheatre in May, once home to Grillstock, Wing Fest will be an absolute dream for chicken lovers with some of the best purveyors of wings from Bristol and beyond serving clucking tasty grub.

It first took place in London in 2014 and now attracts 10,000 people every year, while this year saw the first ever Manchester Wing Fest, which was attended by 5,000 people.

It's headed up by Richard Thacker, who ran a chicken wing street food stall in the capital before launching two restaurants called Randy's Wing Bar, which he then sold to focus on the event.

"The idea behind the first Wing Fest in 2014 was to promote my own food stall," said the 35-year-old.

"People said I was crazy but the reaction to it was insane and it's got bigger and bigger every year.

"Once I realised there was a real market for it I decided to take the festival to Manchester this summer, which went really well, and Bristol seemed like the next obvious place given the city's appetite for food festivals and its amazing food scene."

But the event is not just about stuffing your face with chicken wings.

Over the two days there will also be a range of entertainment including two live music stages playing blues and reggae, axe throwing, beer pairing and more, which is all included in the ticket price.

There will also be two eating challenges people can take part in, with the deadly Dr Sweetsmoke's Lava Wing Challenge sure to raise a few tears and a volume challenge to see who can eat the most wings in a set amount of time.

Revellers will be able to pick their favourite wings from the event using an app, while previous winners from both the Manchester and London events will be in attendance to show off their award-winning chicken to a Bristol audience.

Bristol Wing Fest takes place between May 8-9 in the Lloyds Amphitheatre.

Tickets are not on sale yet but will cost £17.50 for earlybirds and £20 for general sale.
