Massive Attack share message of support after Colston 4 verdict

Massive Attack have spoken out following the conclusion of the Colston 4 which saw all four defendants found not guilty.

The music legends have been vocal in their opinions surrounding the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston back in June 2020.

Four defendants all previously pleaded 'not guilty' to the single charge of criminal damage in a story that captured worldwide attention from the media and across social media.

However, upon conclusion of the trial today Rhian Graham, 30, of Colston Road, Easton in Bristol; Milo Ponsford, 26, of Otter Close in Bishopstoke, Hampshire; Jake Skuse, 37, of Farley Close in Little Stoke, South Gloucestershire and Sage Willoughby, 22, of Gloucester Road in Bristol, were all cleared of the charges by a jury this afternoon.

Massive Attack reached out to their Twitter followers and said: "It took 16 ordinary Bristol citizens - four innocent defendants and 12 jurors - to end a century of intransigence & delay at the hands of successive councils, elected mayors & the Society of Merchant Venturers.

"No monuments to crimes against humanity."

They ended the tweet with the Black Lives Matter and Colston 4 hashtags.

The toppling of the statue happened during a Black Lives Matter rally in Bristol city centre, as part of worldwide protests following the murder in the US of George Floyd.

Following the conclusion of an almost month-long trial, the Colston 4 left Bristol Crown Court to cheer from supporters.

Some held up signs in support that Colston was gone from the city, while others chanted and cheered as they walked down the steps out of Bristol Crown Court.
