Massive Attack say Colston statue should never have stood in our city

One of Bristol biggest bands has thrown their full support behind Colston's statue being torn down and dumped in the floating harbour.

Trip hop legends Massive Attack said the bronze figure should have never stood in our city.

Posting to their 184.4K followers on Twitter, the band said: "Finally.

"The Colston statue should never have been a public monument. It’s history could have been understood in a museum.

"The elevation of a slave trader clashed badly with our civic identity. A philanthropy derived from crimes against humanity is as hollow as the statue itself."

Organisers of the protest, which attracted around 10,000 people, said they had no idea campaigners were going to tear down the statue and they had warned people against breaking the law.

Police have now launched an investigation into the act of criminal damage.

Superintendent Andy Bennett said: “The Black Lives Matter demonstration in Bristol today was attended by an estimated 10,000 people.

“The vast majority of those who came to voice their concerns about racial inequality and injustice did so peacefully and respectfully.

He added: “However, there was a small group of people who clearly committed an act of criminal damage in pulling down a statue near Bristol Harbourside.

“An investigation will be carried out to identify those involved and we’re already collating footage of the incident."
