Massive Attack's anger after Bristol Airport expansion recommended

Massive Attack have added their support to the campaign to stop Bristol Airport expanding.

The band tweeted on Sunday (February 2) to their 168,000 followers asking why the plans should be considered in the face of a current climate emergency.

In a thread which has since been retweeted 429 times and liked more than 1,000 times, Massive Attack tweeted: "In the face of #ClimateEmergency does a city with a population of 460k really need to expand an airport that already provides capacity for 10 million flights (or 20 flights for every citizen) per year?!"

Massive Attack retweeted a Bristol Live article on North Somerset Council's planning officer recommending the plans be approved despite a surge of opposition from local residents, environmental groups and parish councils.

The thread went onto say: "On 10th Feb - 1 year since @NorthSomersetC declared a #ClimateEmergency - its councillors must uphold their declaration by rejecting airport expansion & @BristolCouncil - the first ever UK local authority to declare climate emergency - must echo that rejection. #actnow #stopbristolairportepansion @StopBrisAirport."

The band have been vocal on the climate crisis, working with research academics at Manchester University to map the carbon footprint of the music industry to reduce the environmental impact.

John Adams of the Stop Bristol Airport Expansion campaign said: "With a week to go until the Planning Committee makes the most important decision in North Somerset council's history, Massive Attack's support could not have come at a better time.

"We're thrilled to have such an influential, talented and passionate group behind us and we're aiming to keep the momentum going right up to February 10th."

On Friday, January 31, Bristol Live reported on hundreds of protesters who marched through Bristol city centre in opposition to the airport's expansion plans.

A decision on the plans will be made at a special meeting of the council’s planning committee on Monday, February 10. The meeting will start at 6pm and take place at Weston-super-Mare Town Hall on Oxford Street.

There have been more than 5,400 objections and around 2,200 letters of support.
