Massive Attack played a surprise DJ set at London’s Marble Arch as Extinction Rebellion action moved into its second week.

Robert Del Naja, known as 3D, played in front of more than 1,000 climate change campaigners as darkness fell on Sunday.

Extinction Rebellion said it was a “tranquil moment” following a week of disruption by protesters in the capital.

It tweeted: “Everyone sharing stories from the week, bridges, music, food, arrests, being met by legal observers at 4am outside police stations, new friends, inspiration. Real emergency, real XR community.”

Campaigners were back at Marble Arch – the only Met-sanctioned protest space – on Monday, as activists met to "vision what's going to happen in the coming week".

Among them was Green MP Caroline Lucas, who gave a speech from the stage.

Nearly 1,000 people were arrested during the first seven days of demonstrations, including Olympic gold medallist Etienne Stott on Waterloo Bridge on Sunday.

A spokesman said there would be no escalation of activity on Bank Holiday Monday, but warned the disruption could get "much worse" if politicians were not open to their negotiation requests.

Members would commit to not disrupting other areas in exchange for mayor of London Sadiq Khan speeding up the implementation of the Declaration of Climate and Ecological Emergency, as well as considering setting up a London Citizens' Assembly.
