A giant alligator has been spotted on a golfcourse fairway in the US.

The reptile was caught on camera by a golfer as it stomped towards a lake at Valencia golf course in Naples, Florida.

Social media reacted with shock to footage of the “massive” reptile.

One news reporter tweeted:  "Take a look at this massive gator walking through Valencia Golf Course in Naples. He looks like he belongs in Jurassic park!"

Another added: "Holy crap!!!

"I thought it was a joke of some sort. I've not only never seen one that large but also with such long legs?? Yikes!!"

One wrote: "Godzilla lives in Naples!"

While another tweeted a picture of the 'gator, joking: "Midwest gets a bad wrap, but I'm extremely cool not living near Godzilla and hurricanes"

Alligators are not uncommon on golfing greens built on wildlife preserves on the east coast of America.

As cities are built the animals are pushed out of their natural homes but often return to the lakes. Golfers and alligators have had to learn to co-exist.

Alligators can grow up to 800 pounds and 13 feet long on average.

According to the Everglades National Park, the largest alligator ever recorded measured 17 feet, 5 inches.
