Massive abandoned care home in middle of Scots town goes up for sale

Part of an historic building which used to house an old hospital in Paisley has gone up for sale.

The massive abandoned site, which closed in the late 1980s when the present-day Royal Alexandra Infirmary opened nearby, has been placed on the market with estate agents and property auctioneers Allsops.

They say it could be an ideal opportunity for someone looking to turn the site into residential flats.

The former Alexandra Care Home in Calside has been placed on the market at offers over £600,000.

Lying just off Neilston Road, the grand building has fallen into disrepair after being targeted by vandals.

Built at the turn of the 19th century and designed by the Paisley architect Thomas Graham Abercrombie, the Infirmary itself closed in 1987 when the new hospital was opened with part of the old Infirmary building then used as a care home.

The care home closed in 2008 with the building put on the 'At Risk' register in 2010, it is hoped new owners can be found to restore it to its former glory and breathe new life into it.

The new owners will get just over 2.31 acres of land included in the sale.

Estate Agents Allsop are keen to point out that Planning Permission has previously been granted (in 2006) for Alteration and Change of Use to form 35 dwellings and erect 12 new-build flats, though this has now lapsed.
