Massive £3million cocaine haul seized by border cops at UK port

Customs officers have seized a massive cocaine shipment worth £3million in a lorry entering the UK.

A whopping 35 kilograms of the drug were discovered in a vehicle being driven by a Dutch man, who was arrested after the find.

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that a search of the lorry by Border Force officers found a concealed compartment in the rear doors where 35 kilo-blocks of the drug were secreted.

Hendrik van der Genugten, 40, was arrested and subsequently charged with importing and conspiring to supply cocaine.

He was stopped on Thursday as he arrived at Humber Sea Terminal, operated by Associated British Ports, having travelled from the Hook of Holland.

Van der Genugten has now appeared in court and has been remanded in custody until June 7, when he will appear at Leeds Crown Court.

Greg McKenna, NCA regional head of investigations, said: “This joint investigation with our Border Force colleagues has resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of cocaine which would have made its way to towns and cities across the UK.

“Intercepting these drugs directly impacts the organised crime groups behind the importations - costing them money, disrupting their activities and damaging their reputation at the same time.

“We know there are links between drug supply and violent crime and this seizure demonstrates the NCA’s role in helping to prevent that.”
