A mass COVID-19 vaccination venue will be opened on the planned site of the Tokyo 2020 public viewing area in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike announced Tuesday.
Having the mass vaccination venue will likely mean the cancellation of events and broadcasts of Olympic competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Live Site there. Opening the live site for the duration of the Paralympics is under consideration.
The Tokyo 2020 Live Site in Yoyogi Park was criticized because it required the pruning of trees in the park in Shibuya Ward, mainly by those who are calling for the cancellation of the Games.
The Tokyo metropolitan government is setting up a mass vaccination venue from June 8 at the former site of Tsukiji Market in Chuo Ward to inoculate employees of the Metropolitan Police Department and the Tokyo Fire Department. As the venue will have to close at the end of this month because the site is scheduled to be used as a transportation hub for the Tokyo Games, it was necessary to set up another mass vaccination venue to administer the second dose of the vaccine.
At Yoyogi Park in Shibuya Ward, the electrical equipment and other facilities for the Tokyo 2020 Live Site will be appropriated for the mass vaccination venue.
