Mass vaccination centres to open within days

Mass vaccination centres at football grounds will open within days, Downing Street said – with England’s national stadium and Chelsea’s ground offering jabs.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Wembley will open as a mass vaccination site on Sunday.

“Stamford Bridge is also opening up.”

The spokesman said “football stadia have played a vital role in the rollout of our programme”.

The Science Museum in London is also offering jabs “and there will be further sites across the whole UK as well, both large and small”.

People should not rely on vaccinations alone to provide protection when meeting friends and family over Christmas, Downing Street said.

“We would advise people to get tested, to open a window,” the spokesman said.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman told reporters “there are no plans to go beyond what we have set out” in terms of restrictions.

But, he added: “We would encourage anyone meeting up with friends and family to get themselves tested, to take heed of ventilation and other advice that we have put out.

“It’s vitally important that people don’t forget the basic steps that we have been talking about for some time now and don’t simply just rely on vaccination or their boosters. There’s other mitigations that you can put in place that are very important.”
