Mass vaccination centre in Cardiff to continue offering first doses to walk-ins until Sunday

A mass vaccination centre is set to continue offering walk-in appointments to any adult who has not received a first dose.

Bayside Mass Vaccination Centre, based at the old Toys R Us site in Cardiff Bay, will carry on operating as a walk-in service until Sunday, June 6.

It follows the success of a four-day trial over the bank holiday period which saw 2,150 people turn up to receive the first dose of their Covid vaccine without an appointment.

Tracy Meredith, head of operations for testing and mass immunisations at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said: "The vaccine is still our best defence against Covid-19 and we would encourage anyone who is eligible to receive their vaccine to please get it.

"We have invited all of our adult population to attend but are aware there will be some people that have been missed as we perhaps did not have up to date contact details or they opted out at the start of the programme.

"The walk in was a great opportunity for people to attend and word of mouth definitely encouraged more people to come along. We need to remember that Covid is still with us but the vaccine is protecting people and the NHS."

Anyone aged 18 and over who lives and works in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan is urged to attend Bayside MVC between 8.30am-7.30pm to receive their first dose. The site offers both the Pfizer and Oxford AstraZeneca vaccines.

As all people aged 18 and over have now received an invitation from Cardiff and Vale UHB, they are now reaching out to those that have not received an invite to attend the centre.

The walk-in centre also provides an opportunity to speak to the vaccination team if you have any questions or concerns about receiving the jab.

People waiting for second doses will automatically receive an appointment via letter and text message 11 weeks after their first. If people have not received an invite by this date please call the health board's booking line on 02921 841234.
