Mass vaccination centers run by the Self-Defense Forces in Tokyo and Osaka will start inoculating people aged 64 or younger from Thursday, The Defense Ministry has decided.
Regardless of their registered address, anyone who has a vaccination voucher can make a reservation starting Wednesday.
The mass vaccination centers have been inoculating people aged 65 or older since May 24, but many slots have remained unfilled.
The centers can inoculate up to 15,000 people per day. However, as of 5 p.m. on Monday, only 34.7% of the available 195,000 slots for the period between June 15 to 27 have been filled.
As an impromptu measure to fill unreserved slots, the Tokyo site began vaccinating police personnel, firefighters, SDF members and others involved in crisis management who can come to the venue at short notice on Monday.
However, slots for June 28 and onward are almost fully booked by elderly residents who will receive their second shots. As a result, it has not yet been decided whether to accept reservations for those aged 64 or younger during that time.
