Mass gathering at park with 'bonfire and dancing' sparks police response

People gathering around a 'bonfire' in a park sparked a police response after those attending were seen 'waving flags and dancing'.

Responding to reports of antisocial behaviour and coronavirus breaches, officers attended Otterspool Promenade at 4pm on Saturday (March 20).

A large group had been spotted by eyewitnesses 'waving flags and dancing around a bonfire'' in a metal drum as part of a religious ceremony.

Police alongside Merseyside Fire Service attended and spoke to the group about Covid regulations and "possible fines".

The crowd, who were said to be cooperating with officers, were then dispersed.

Two police cars and Matrix vans were spotted in the area for approximately an hour to make sure the area remained clear.

Merseyside Police said they established that it was not a bonfire but "a small fire contained in a metal tin being used by the group as part of a religious celebration."

Chief Inspector Chris Barnes said: "This group decided to meet up despite the fact we're still in a national lockdown - people are only permitted to mix outdoors with one other person outside their household or support bubble.

"We will continue to respond to reports of breaches of current legislation, and proactively patrol to ensure members of the public are adhering to the restrictions."
