Mass coronavirus vaccination roll out planned by Scottish Government

Scotland's health minister revealed a plan is being made to vaccinate Scots when a coronavirus vaccine is made available.

Jeane Freeman is working with experts from across the UK to deliver a nationwide vaccination programme as soon as possible.

She was speaking at the Scottish Government's lunchtime briefing today, shortly after pharmaceutical giant Pfizer announced it has developed a coronavirus vaccine shown to be 90 per cent effective in trials.

And she insists that the plan will be ready to implement when the first batch of vaccine is delivered.

Ms Freeman said she's still waiting on the UK Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisation to make a final decision on which groups will be given priority.

The UK has secured 40 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, which was developed with BioNTech.

There are yet no details of volumes or timescales.

But Ms Freeman point out: "We've had quite a detailed discussion about whatever those volumes are, what would be the proportion coming to Scotland and we've settled on it being a population share.

"Because when we do the calculations based on where we think the numbers are in terms of priority groups, the difference is minimal."
