Mason Mount reveals why he and and Jorginho were ‘laughing’ at Timo Werner’s miss in Chelsea’s FA Cup win

Mason Mount has revealed both he and Jorginho “were laughing” at watching Timo Werner’s work-rate during Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Crystal Palace.

The German forward has often been criticised for a lack of end product since joining the club in the summer of 2020, scoring 22 goals and registering 21 assists in 84 appearances.

Few, however, could doubt the 26-year-old’s application, as well as the problems his searing pace causes opposing defences.

Brought back into the starting lineup of late, Werner scored twice in the 6-0 win over Southampton before netting in the Champions League classic against Real Madrid, taking his tally up to 10 goals and 6 assists in only 19 starts this season.

With Romelu Lukaku struggling to justify his own huge price tag, Werner has often looked more comfortable operating alongside Kai Havertz and Mason Mount in a more fluid frontline.

Mount, who scored the second goal in a 2-0 win at Wembley, revealed he and teammate Jorginho were laughing at the sheer determination Werner had to sprint and track back after missing a chance with the game already beyond Palace.

“He’s been brilliant since he came in at Southampton and then in Madrid,’ said Mount.

“You can see he’s full of energy. In the second half there was a moment where he missed a chance but then me and Jorginho were laughing on the bench because he sprinted all the way back to the halfway line and made a tackle.

“That’s what we’re all about. He gives everything so I’m very pleased for him. He got me a little assist, could have had another one and he could have had a couple of goals as well. He’s done so well the past couple of games.”
