Mason Mount might have played last game for Chelsea amid Liverpool transfer interest

Mason Mount could have played his last game for Chelsea after Frank Lampard confirmed the midfielder is set to miss the rest of the season through injury.

The England international is believed to be one of Liverpool’s first-choice transfer targets this summer, with the Reds planning to revamp their midfield. Out of contract at Stamford Bridge next year and yet to agree a new deal, Chelsea will sell the 24-year-old at the end of the season if he doesn’t sign an extension.

With his future uncertain as a result, Mount could have played his last game for the club after Lampard confirmed he will undergo minor surgery on a pelvic injury.

“Reece James unavailable probably for the season. Mason Mount the same,” the Chelsea caretaker manager confirmed to reporters. “Potential for the last game of the season but probably not. That's obviously disappointing for us...

“(A big blow) for all of us because they're big players... Mason has been carrying this pelvic issue for quite a while. It definitely pre-dates myself, so a while.

“He's been trying, typically, and the medical staff have been trying but we've got to the stage now where he will have minor surgery. Then probably a four-week recovery which we all know where that gets us to.”

While he would come on as a substitute in both legs of Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid earlier this month, a 16-minute substitute appearance against Brighton & Hove Albion is Mount's only Premier League outing since the end of February as he continued to be troubled by his pelvic injury.

Not at his best because of the setback, the uncertainty regarding his future, and Chelsea's own struggles on the pitch, the midfielder has been limited to 35 appearances so far this season, with 26 coming from the start. Yet he remains one of Liverpool's priority targets this summer after the Reds withdrew from the race to signing Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham.
