Mason Mount injury: Chelsea Champions League debut ended by tackle from ex-Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin

Mason Mount's Champions League debut came to a premature end after sustaining an ankle injury just nine minutes into Chelsea's group stage opener against Valencia.

The 20-year-old suffered a heavy knock to his ankle after a high challenge from Valencia's Francis Coquelin, who was shown a yellow card for the tackle from referee Cuneyt Cakir.

The Chelsea midfielder initially tried to run off the knock but soon realised he couldn't continue and limped off to a standing ovation at Stamford Bridge.

Mount, who had scored three goals after an impressive start to the season which included an England debut against Bulgaria, was replaced by Spanish winger Pedro.

Mount's injury will cause some concern for Frank Lampard with the Blues set to face Liverpool on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

It could see Christian Pulisic come into the side to replace the attacking midfielder after the American sat out of the 5-2 win over Wolves.
