Mason Mount gives Thomas Tuchel food for thought with Chelsea captaincy claim

Mason Mount has admitted that being made Chelsea captain gave him more confidence in his performances.

It has given Thomas Tuchel something to think about ahead of next season.

The German has had an incredible start to his life as Blues boss - winning the Champions League, beating Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Porto along the way before a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the final.

Mount has been a crucial part of that side, continuing his key role in the Chelsea starting XI as he did under Frank Lampard.

The England international was given the armband on two occasions for the Blues, something he has taken immense pride in.

And the 22-year-old, who was awarded the club's Player of the Year award, has revealed he has loved every second as captain.

"I’ve had the captain’s armband twice now and that gives me extra confidence," the youngster told Chelsea's official website.

"I have that belief that I’m doing well but I can also get even better.

"That’s something as a player that you need to really improve.

"I’m learning more and more about that role. I had it when I was a bit younger in the youth teams where I was captain a couple of times."

John Terry was the last player to come up through the academy to wear the armband and Tuchel could consider Mount as the next to do so.

"When you reach the senior game, you can still be someone that leads by example but you can’t just be that," Mount added.

"You need to bring more to the team and as a captain at a big club like this, to have that personality and vocalness around the boys really helps.

"You look at the players in the past who have been top players and legends of this club, captains that you can try and take things off.

"That’s something I’ve always looked at growing up and I still look at now."
