Mason Mount boosts Chelsea hopes ahead of Liverpool clash with positive injury update

Chelsea have not had a happy return to Champions League football.

A 1-0 home loss against La Liga side Valencia was compounded by a late penalty miss from Ross Barkley and an injury to midfielder Mason Mount in the first half.

It was less than 10 minutes into the Chelsea youngster's debut in the competition when a bad tackle from former Arsenal man Francis Coquelin put a premature end to Mount's night.

Coquelin was shown a yellow card for the challenge, but despite attempts to carry on, Mount was replaced by Pedro just five minutes later. The picture of the midfielder hobbling off the pitch would have been one that concerned Chelsea fans, especially with the Blues' facing League leaders Liverpool in their next Premier League game.

Fans are waiting patiently for an update on the youngster, and Mount himself may have provided some positive news, saying that he is 'hopeful' of being fit for the Premier League encounter with the Reds.

The 20-year-old walked through the mixed zone with a mild limp, but it what would be a good sign for fans, the player had no crutches, no boot or straps on his ankle and was wearing normal trainers.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has also given an update on the midfielder's condition.

Frank Lampard 'proud' to manage Chelsea in Champions League

“He has got an ankle injury, we don’t know how bad it is, we are going to have to assess it in the next 24-48 hours to see the scale of the injury. To see how it is," he said

"It’s too soon to say, obviously it was a shame because he was playing so well and started well and we had to make the change early.”
