Mason Holgate lifts the lid on why Everton teammates used to laugh at him

Mason Holgate has admitted his ability in front of goal had become a running joke with his teammates before the defender bagged his first goal for Everton.

The youngster finally got off the mark for the Blues in the Carabao Cup earlier this season, giving his side the lead from close range in a 2-0 win over Watford at Goodison Park.

And, in a wide-ranging question and answer session on Everton's official Twitter page on Thursday evening, the 23-year-old revealed he had become the butt of a few jokes around the training ground.

Holgate said: "Yeah it was really good to score my first goal.

"It kind of got made a bit of a joke that I hadn't scored in a while, I'm not really great at scoring in training and stuff like that so people were laughing, mainly Jordan to be fair saying that I'm never going to score!

"So to finally get one in was good."

The questions answered by the defender were sent in by supporters and covered a large range of topics, including any potential desires to be a future club captain.

Holgate used that opportunity to give current skipper Seamus Coleman full credit for helping him learn as a player.

"Obviously it would be a massive honour and it'd be great to do that," he added.

"But at the moment we've got Seamus [Coleman] who's a fantastic captain and has helped me ever since I've been at the club and has done so many things for me.

"I think the whole changing room has got so much respect [for him], so to learn from him and have him as a captain at the moment is great and I think the whole changing room can vouch for that themselves."

Holgate was also asked about the aspects of his game he would like to improve - admitting that he wants to continue working on even his best qualities to perfect his technique.

The defender remarked: "The strongest aspect of my game, I'd like to think, would be on the ball and coming out from the back.

"The things I'd work on would be every part of my game, including that. None of it is perfect and I don't get everything right every time.

"So I'd like to work on all aspects of my game, including the strong points as well."

The wide-ranging topics of course included his toughest opponent - and Holgate opted for a common scourge of Premier League defences in recent years.

"The best player I've ever defended against would probably be [Eden] Hazard," the 23-year-old confirmed.

"It could go either way, drop of a hat, it was really difficult."
