Mason Holgate in line for first England call-up after impressing with Everton

Mason Holgate is in line for a first England call-up.

England boss Gareth Southgate and his staff have watched Everton defender Hoglate in his last three games and have been impressed with what they have seen.

Central defender Holgate has been in fine form for Everton this season and his convincing displays could see him rewarded with a full England call-up.

The 23-year-old, who can play anywhere along the back line and in midfield, is being considered by Southgate, not least for his versatility, which could prove invaluable at Euro 2020.

Southgate is weighing up whether to call up Holgate - capped six times by the Under-21s - for the friendlies against Italy and Denmark at Wembley at the end of March.

Comfortable playing in a back-four, Holgate is equally adaptable playing on the left side of a back three, should Southgate opt to play with that formation.

His ability to bring the ball out from the back is suited to the style played by Southgate and the England boss has been impressed by Holgate's progress this season.

Linked with a move to Sheffield United at the start of the season, Holgate has emerged as one of Everton's most consistent performers and is thriving under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Holgate is set to keep his place in the Everton defence alongside Yerry Mina for the clash with Newcastle on Tuesday night.
