Mason Greenwood returns to Man Utd training facing two tests after England axe

Mason Greenwood was back at Manchester United on Thursday as the young forward seeks to put his England indiscretions behind him.

The eighteen-year-old was unceremoniously dumped out of the Three Lions squad by Gareth Southgate on Monday after breaking coronavirus protocols during the team's Nations League trip to Iceland, a first with the senior team for Greenwood and Manchester City's Phil Foden.

The pair's actions in bringing two Icelandic women into their hotel room inside England's bio-secure bubble was at best naive and at worst quite dangerous.

Both Greenwood and Foden had to be left behind as England went on to Copenhagen for their next match, Tuesday's drab goalless draw, as what should have been a memorable week for the Manchester-based pair was ruined by their own indiscipline.

But given the talent of both players, nobody is interested in prolonging their agony and embarrassment, least of all the hierarchy at Manchester United.

It was notable their statement on Greenwood was a little more protective than City's on Foden, a 20-year-old father who has been around the first team squad for a few years now.

United are more likely to throw an arm around Greenwood than to chastise him in public, and his meeting with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sure to reflect that response.

The young forward will now face two tests when he returns to the fold at Carrington.

The first, quite obviously, will be a test for coronavirus.

All players at all top-flight clubs will be taking those right now as the season prepares to get under way, even though United are starting a week later against Crystal Palace due to their European exertions last month.

The second test will be more important though.

Solskjaer will be eager to know just how Greenwood has reacted to his unwanted time in the spotlight, and how he's feeling ahead of the first season he's ever entered knowing of his status in the first-team squad.

Manchester United's new No.11 can be certain that his teammates will back him, they are captained by a man who knows all about difficult situations this summer of course.

But Solskjaer will want to look the teenager in the eye, remind him of his responsibilities and of the fact that United are relying on him this season.

There is still no Jadon Sancho at Old Trafford, and that means Greenwood is going to get another free run at a spot in Solskjaer's team.

No-one is doubting that he has the ability to maintain it, but after his first real brush with the expectations that come with being a United and England footballer, he'll need to show that he can handle life at the very top.
