Mason Greenwood names Manchester United teammate as his biggest influence

Mason Greenwood believes Manchester United teammate Marcus Rashford has had the biggest influence on his career so far.

The 18-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, netting 18 goals in all competitions to help United secure a return to the Champions League.

Greenwood's impressive form led to praise from legendary England forwards Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney with Gareth Southgate rewarding his efforts with a debut call-up to the senior England national team.

The youngster would have been joined by Rashford in the England camp before an ankle injury forced the left winger to withdraw from the squad.

Greenwood heaped praise on his countryman and named him as someone he looks up to.

"Marcus," he said when asked who has been the biggest influence on his career so far. "He's taken the same path as me at the club.

"He's helped me a lot and he's done the same thing as me.

"He's been in my position and knows how it feels. It's nice to have someone like that and someone to look up to but also I play with him which is a bonus.

"He's a good lad. We're all proud of him. It's amazing what he's trying to do [off the pitch]."

Rooney claimed Greenwood was the best finisher at United and backed him to be a viable understudy for Harry Kane in the national setup.

Greenwood acknowledged his comments but reiterated his focus on improving.

He said: "It's nice to hear them things but it's about staying focused and proving the point on the pitch. Wayne is a big United legend so it's amazing to hear. I've watched him as a kid so to hear things like that puts a smile on my face.

"Every young kid loves the goalscorers, so hopefully one day [I'll lead the line]."
