Mason Greenwood names his Manchester United role model

Mason Greenwood has named Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as his ultimate football role model.

Just like Greenwood, Rooney burst onto the scene as a forward in the Premier League before establishing himself as the first choice striker at United.

The 18-year-old still has a long way to go if he is to match the extraordinary scoring feats of Rooney but after a strong start to the season he will be confident of making his own mark on the first-team.

However, despite shining in the academy system during Rooney's latter years at the club, Greenwood has revealed that he has still never met the club legend.

When quizzed on his football role model over the international break, the United youngster cited both Rooney and Ronaldo Lima as the two biggest inspirations in his career so far.

“It has to be Rooney,” he told Daily Mail.

“The Brazilian Ronaldo, too. They’ve always stood out for me and I’ve always looked up to them. Ronaldo was quite a while ago but my dad used to show me clips of him.

“Rooney is such a great goalscorer and that is what I want to be. You have to have a role model. I’ve never seen him, though. I’ve watched his games and the highlights on YouTube. Hopefully, I’ll get to meet him one day.”
