Mason Greenwood hopes Man City drop points as Man United close Premier League gap

Mason Greenwood hopes Manchester City drop points in the Premier League title race.

The Reds closed the gap on the league leaders to eight points after beating Burnley 3-1 on Sunday thanks to a brace from Greenwood and a late strike from Edinson Cavani which confirmed the result.

While it seems unlikely that City will collapse and forfeit their cushion at the top of the table, United are increasing the pressure on their bitter rivals, and there's no doubt officials at the Etihad will now be looking over their shoulders.

Ironically, United boasted an eight-point lead with six games to play in 2012 - just like City do now - and they could possibly seek the ultimate atonement for that Sergio Aguero moment if certain fixtures fall their way.

Greenwood was asked about that possibility post-match by SkySports, and while the 19-year-old remained diplomatic and professional on the situation, he admitted he would love for City to drop points.

“You can never have any doubt but they might slip up. We’ve got to keep concentrating on our games and whatever happens, happens. Anything is possible, hopefully they drop some points but we’ll keep focused," Greenwood said.

On a personal note, it was another strong display from Greenwood and he now has four goals from his last three games.

“I kept focused, I knew my goals would come, I’ve just kept my head down and taken my opportunities," he added.

“I like to do it often [cut in from the right], I did it a lot last season and I’m doing it a bit now, but you’ve got to mix your game up or defenders will catch you out. It’s a good trait I have.

“I’m happy with both of my goals and I’m happy that I’m playing a lot. Obviously, Ole trusts me and that’s what I like to see."
