Mason Greenwood handed Man Utd warning after missing wins over Newcastle and PSG

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood is understood to have been warned about his timekeeping.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer denied Greenwood, 19, missed United's 4-1 win at Newcastle and 2-1 Champions League victory away to Paris St Germain because of disciplinary issues.

United boss Solskjaer claimed Greenwood was missing because of a “niggle”, but it has been claimed the striker has been spoken to about punctuality issues. United declined to comment when contacted.

Greenwood's omission from United's squad that travelled to Paris was a surprise, given he was pictured in full training with his team-mates just hours before they flew to the French capital.

It remains to be seen whether Greenwood is recalled by Solskjaer for Saturday's visit of Chelsea in the Premier League, as United look to build on back-to-back victories with a first win of the season at Old Trafford.

Greenwood was sent home from England duty last month, along with Manchester City's Phil Foden, for smuggling two women into the team hotel, in a breach of strict Covid-19 protocol.

Both were dropped for England's next match against Denmark and were not picked by Gareth Southgate for the latest international break.

Given Greenwood had not been away on international duty and had trained at United's AON Training Complex for two weeks, his omission from the squad to face Newcastle raised eyebrows.

United face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday looking to build on their back-to-back victories.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward backed Solskjaer as he spoke to investors on Wednesday, during the club's quarterly conference call.

"On the field, we will never be satisfied at Manchester United unless we are winning trophies. But our third-place finish in the Premier League and strong cup runs last season showed that, while there is more hard work ahead and the path is not always smooth, we are making progress.

"We have a clear strategy under Ole to build a successful, committed team, with a core of homegrown talent blended with high-quality recruits that plays fast flowing, attacking football."
