Mason Greenwood backed to be Manchester United's own version of Harry Kane

Mason Greenwood has been backed to become Manchester United's own version of Harry Kane.

The 19-year-old has spent the last two seasons playing largely on the right wing, scoring at an excellent rate and taking to men's football really well despite his youth. But this season Greenwood has started excellently, scoring in both Premier League games against Leeds and then Southampton.

The win over Leeds saw Greenwood played as the number nine through the middle and he was highly praised for his performance where he ran the channels and scored a brilliant goal.

United have been linked with a striker, with Gary Neville insisting that the club should be targeting Harry Kane when he was looking likely to join Man City.

Now former United academy winger Luke Chadwick believes that the club have already got their own version of Kane in Greenwood and he should be backed to develop as a centre forward.

“I think Ole will be satisfied enough with the start – four points on the board after the two games, you can’t really complain too much about that,” Chadwick said to Caught Offside.

“I think after the flying start against Leeds everyone was expecting them to blow Southampton away, but that never really happened.

“I think the most exciting thing is that key players have hit the ground running – Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, and Mason Greenwood in that number 9 position.

“We’ve sort of talked about Kane going to City and who could United get in, but perhaps Greenwood can do that job for the whole season. We know he can score goals and he’s only getting better.

“I expected maybe Jadon Sancho would come in and start his first game against Southampton, but I’m sure he’ll get that start soon. Pogba, Sancho, Greenwood, Fernandes – it does look like an exciting time ahead for United fans.”

Greenwood will be looking to continue his fine form this weekend against Wolves after being left out of the England squad by manager Gareth Southgate for the upcoming internationals.
