Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has apologised and urged others “not to follow” his example after being photographed inhaling nitrous oxide.
The teenage attacker has only recently issued another apology after having to depart the England squad early, along with Phil Foden, after the two breached coronavirus quarantine guidelines within the national team set-up.
Photos of Greenwood inhaling what is more commonly known as laughing gas were published by a national newspaper recently and the United man says he has been made aware of the health risks of doing so.
“I strongly urge others not to follow my example,” he said in a statement.
"I have now been made aware of the health risks associated with this practice and accept that even trying it, as shown in these historical pictures, was poor judgement on my part.
"As an 18-year-old, I am learning all the time.
"However, this week I have also learned I will be judged to a higher standard because of my career as a footballer and I must respect that in future.
"I am determined to repay the faith shown in me by my manager and coaches."
There is no illegality about the situation as nitrous oxide is both legally sold and possessed, though it is not legal to be sold as a drug.
Greenwood is currently training in isolation back at his club, in keeping with protocols, and will hope to refocus attention on him to his considerable on-pitch qualities when United start their 2020/21 campaign next weekend against Crystal Palace.
