Masked vigilante dad jailed after running down men he believed sold drugs to his son

A vigilante dad who ran down two men he believed sold drugs to his son has been jailed for 12 months.

Masked Craig Topen also battered a third man with a golf club after forming a lynch mob.

The 42-year-old Dundonian smashed his Land Rover Freelander through a fence and into one man.

He deliberately crashed into a second man before getting out of the car, punching and kicking the third man and whacking him with a golf club.

Businessman Topen, who runs a joinery firm, admitted carrying out the vigilante attack which left Ilian Iliev severely injured. Solicitor Ross Donnelly, defending, said: “His recollection is of a fairly frenzied matter.”

Sheriff Alistair Carmichael said: “I have decided that to deter others from behaving in a similar way, and to express society’s disapproval, there’s no alternative to a custodial sentence.”

Topen admitted acting with others and, with their faces masked, to attacking Kenneth McCluskey, Liam Cuthbert and Iliev in Craigmount Road, Dundee, in November 2019.
