Masked thieves stole £6,000 worth of cigarettes from Frenchay's Spar

The devastated owner of Frenchay's Spar says the future of his business hangs in the balance after thieves stole £6,000 worth of cigarettes.

Imran Baghir has no money to replace the stock, which was taken on Friday (August 14) at around 9pm.

He is now desperate to see the thieves brought to justice and has released CCTV of the moment the items were stolen.

This is the the third time in three years, thugs have targeted his business.

Imran has been working 12-hour days throughout the pandemic to make ends meet.

He says customers mainly come in for cigarettes, and fears his livelihood might not survive this latest incident.

"These people have no feelings," said the 48-year-old. "I've worked all the time, risking my life to serve the community through the coronavirus.

"And now this has happened. I have no money to replace the stock. Cigarettes are very valuable and lots of people come in just for them."

Last year, it cost the business around £50,000 when burglars broke in and damaged the building's shutters at the same time. Not all the money was recuperated through insurance.

In 2018, thieves broke in again, this time making off with around £20,000 of cigarettes.

In the latest theft, one man distracted the shop assistant by asking her to show him where washing powder was sold. Then a second man made-off with a huge box of cigarettes that had just been delivered to the shop.

Officers at Avon and Somerset Police have now launched an investigation.

A force spokesperson said: "We’re investigating reports of cigarettes being stolen from a convenience store in Bristol.

"The incident happened in Frome Valley Road at about 9pm on Friday August 14.

"Enquiries, including viewing CCTV, are ongoing.

"We’d ask anyone with information about the incident to report it here or call 101 and give the call-handler reference 5220184377."
