Masked robbers armed with crow bars and sledge hammers stole cash from a Co-op.
The trio walked into the supermarket on Wilbraham Road, in Chorlton, shortly before 10pm on Wednesday, May 27.
They went onto steal a quantity of cash boxes.
According to police, the offenders then made off in a blue BMW. There were no reports of any injuries and no arrests have been made.
An eyewitness said they saw a vehicle driving away with a metal chain attached, dragging what they thought was a cash machine behind.
The witness said: "We heard a massive crash. We panicked and thought somebody was in a car crash.
"We ran out to see what was happening. A car had a chain around it. The window of the shop was all smashed.
"The police put tape all around it late in the evening. There were shards of metal all down the road."
A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed cash boxes were taken from the shop.
She said: "Shortly before 10pm yesterday (Wednesday, May 27, 2020) police were called to reports of a business robbery on Wilbraham Road, Manchester.
"Enquiries have established that three masked offenders - who were armed with crow bars and sledge hammers - entered a store and stole a quantity of cash.
"The offenders made off in a blue BMW car. No one was injured and no arrests have been made.
"Enquires are ongoing."
