Masked robbers held a 14-year-old girl at gunpoint and attacked her father with an axe during a raid at their family's home in Manchester.

The teenager was forced to hand over her phone at gunpoint by two men who broke into the house in Wythenshawe on Tuesday night.

Her 50-year-old father suffered head and leg injuries during the raid in Goldie Avenue shortly after 9.30pm, Greater Manchester Police said.

He was treated in hospital but has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Detective Inspector Lisa Ogden said: "The entire family have been left shaken after this terrifying attack in their own home, and it is utterly despicable that a gun was pointed at an innocent 14-year-old girl.

"We are determined to find the men responsible for this and ensure they are held to account for their actions."

The robbers threatened the family before stealing the girl's mobile phone and cash and fleeing on foot across a nearby field.

Police said the man brandishing a gun was described as white, in 20s, with a local accent. His accomplice was wearing a black balaclava and grey hoodie.

Officers have stepped up patrol in the area to reassure locals.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
