A masked man has left a family feeling "physically sick" after he broke into their home last night.
Police attended the address on Lauriston Road in Walton, just before 10pm, following reports a yob wearing a balaclava had got inside a property.
The burglar was confronted by the homeowner, but chose to flee and made off empty-handed.
Locals said the intruder may have been with an accomplice who helped him to escape in an old-style Golf car.
One family member, who advised people to look their house doors and cars, said: "I feel physically sick, they were literally in our house, my dad just missed them all masked up."
Merseyside Police said they were investigating the confrontational burglary.
A spokesman said: "At around 9.50pm, we were called to Lauriston Road to a report of entry being gained to a home by a man wearing a face covering.
"The man was reportedly confronted by an occupant and made off empty-handed.
"CCTV, house-to-house and witness enquiries have been ongoing."
Detective Inspector Sean Kelly-Martland said: “For someone to come across an intruder in their home is a horrible experience, and thankfully this man left immediately upon being disturbed.
“We are carrying out enquiries locally for witnesses and CCTV and I’d also ask anyone who lives on or near to Lauriston Road to check their own devices.
