Masked golf club raider owns up to his crime more than 50 years later

A thief who stole from a golf club has owned up to his crime – more than 50 years later.

Rob Livingstone has repaid cash he and his pals took from Gatehouse Golf Club in 1969.

The group helped themselves to £6 and 12 shillings from the honesty box at the Galloway club and split it three ways – but a fourth chum refused to take any of the ill-gotten gains.

However, it has troubled Rob ever since so he contacted the club to confess and give them a £120 donation.

Gatehouse GC bosses praised Rob for his honesty and offered him a free round as a thank you.

Rob, now 65 and living in Perth, said: “I’ve always told my kids to be straight with money. It didn’t sit right with me so I checked and £6 12 shillings is worth £109.35 now. I made it up to £120.

“I emailed the club captain and said it felt good hitting the transfer button. My conscience is clear.”

Recalling the raid, Rob added: “We played nine holes and somebody suggested we take the money but I said it didn’t seem right. I got persuaded but one of the four of us kept his moral compass.”

Gatehouse captain Pete Haslam said: “It’s one of the perils of having an honesty box. We now have a safe.”
