A man was brutally attacked by a masked gang who then hurled an 'unknown substance' into his face, police have revealed.
A major police investigation is now underway in Rochdale.
The horror attack - in which the man was taken to hospital - happened on West Street, at its junction with Yorkshire Street just outside the town centre.
Emergency services raced to the scene at 6.40pm on Saturday evening.
In an update on Sunday, Greater Manchester Police confirmed the 27-year-old victim, who hasn't been named, was taken to hospital.
Thankfully, his injuries are not said to be life-threatening.
The substance involved hasn't been further described.

Firefighters were also called to assist police at the scene, with a video taken showing the area cordoned off.
It's not known how many attackers were involved.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police told the Manchester Evening News : "Officers were called to West Street, Rochdale, at about 6.40pm on October 9 to reports a man had been assaulted.
"It is believed a 27-year-old man was attacked by a group of males in balaclavas and had an unknown substance thrown in his face.

"The victim's injuries are not life threatening.
"He was treated at hospital but has been discharged.
"There have been no arrests and enquiries are ongoing."
A spokesperson for GMFRS said: "At approximately 7pm on Saturday, October 9, firefighters were called to assist police with an incident on West Street.
"Two fire engines quickly attended the scene."
No further details have been revealed.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
