Masked burglars caught on CCTV using angle grinder on takeaway safe

This is the moment masked thugs smashed their way inside a Salford takeaway before trying to steal an ATM safe.

CCTV footage from City Grill on Chapel Street shows two men crawling through a door panel armed with what appears to be a crow bar and an angle grinder.

One of the burglars then takes the circular saw-like tool and tries to cut through the cash machine door.

Huge, bright sparks are sent flying, and the room begins to quickly fill with smoke.

The fast food shop was targeted by thieves just before midnight on Monday, June 24.

According to the owner, the pair managed to somehow prise open the metal security shutters, before smashing the glass in the door to crawl inside.

"There was a massive fridge in front of the door and they managed to push that out of the way as well," he said.

"They were in and out in less than four minutes."

It is believed the angle grinder's blade snapped due to the heat - forcing the crooks to escape empty handed.

The ATM machine was attached to the former Costcutter store, which is now part of City Grill.

The takeaway only opened its doors a month ago, and the break in has hit the business hard.

"We've had to replace the shutter and the glass," the owner added.

"There was a lot of smoke damage inside as well to stock.

"We are a new business and this has hit us quite hard.

"It's very disappointing - the cash machine used to bring customers in, but after this we are having to get rid of it."

A spokesman for GMP confirmed it was investigating the incident and that officers were aware of CCTV footage.
