Marymass Festival set to be cancelled amid coronavirus outbreak

This year's Marymass Festival is set to be cancelled, the Irvine Herald understands.

The move - expected to be confirmed by Irvine Carters Society in the next few days - comes amid continued uncertainty around the coronavirus crisis.

Carters Captain Danny Kerr refused to comment when we contacted him tonight.

But a Facebook post by a fellow Carter earlier this evening - which has now been deleted - questioned why the Society had yet to make a formal announcement.

It read:  “This has still to be posted on either Marymass Facebook page or Irvine Carters Society Facebook page. “Marymass CANCELLED this year."

Earlier this week we reported how the Marymass Planning Committee cancelled all planned interviews for the coveted Marymass Marys and queen elect role - set for June- in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.

It is the second time in history the beloved annual festival has been thrown in to turnmoil in its 92 years. The festival was cancelled from 1940 - 1945 as the second world war raged on.
