Marymass derby: Irvine Meadow co-bosses poised to dust off boots as side face two cup games in less than 24 hours

Co-bosses Colin Spence and James Latta are ready to dust off their boots to help Irvine Meadow through a crazy fixtures pile-up.

Medda face playing three games in four days later this month – including twice in less than 24 hours – with the annual Marymass Trophy derby against town rivals Irvine Vics sandwiched in between crunch league and Scottish Junior Cup clashes.

And Spence and Latta, who quit playing last year to concentrate fully on management duties, admit they may need to throw themselves into the heat of battle once more to ease the burden on their players.

Spence said: “It’s some schedule but we just have to get on with it.

“We play Darvel in the league on Wednesday, August 18, then Irvine Vics on the Friday night in the Marymass game and Deveronside the following afternoon in the first round of the Scottish Junior Cup.

“People might say we could have pulled out of the Marymass game but we didn’t want to do that because it’s a big thing for the town and it's a great tradition.

“It’s a lot to ask boys to play three games in four days so we will need to freshen things up.

“That will probably mean myself and James digging out the boots again. We’ll also need to look at bringing some youngsters in from the U20s and some trialists if we have to."
