Maryland State Sen. Zirkin (D) resigns

State Sen. Bobby Zirkin (D) resigned from the Maryland State Senate on January 2, 2019. Zirkin had announced on December 3, 2019, that he would resign after 20 years in the Maryland legislature in order to practice law and spend more time with his family.

Zirkin was first elected to represent District 11 in the State Senate in 2006 and previously served in the Maryland House of Representatives beginning in 1999.

His seat is currently vacant and his replacement must be nominated by the Baltimore County Democratic Central Committee. Gov. Larry Hogan (R) will then need to confirm or refuse the nominee but is unable to nominate his own selection for the seat.
