BALTIMORE – Maryland reported 1,862 people currently hospitalized with the coronavirus Wednesday, the most since officials began tracking the pandemic in March.
That’s an increase of 91 patients from Tuesday, according to Maryland Department of Health data. Furthermore, 444 patients hospitalized for the disease required intensive care.
The state reported 3,146 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, as well as 47 more deaths on account of COVID-19, the disease the virus causes.
Maryland has now lost 5,960 people to the virus, while 169 more people are suspected to have died from the disease but so far have not been confirmed by laboratory testing, according to Maryland Department of Health data.
A total of 289,758 people have contracted the disease in Maryland, since officials began tracking the virus in March.
Meanwhile, the state’s testing positivity rate bounced up to 9.44% after dropping slightly to 9.19% Tuesday.
Less than a day after Gov. Larry Hogan announced a series of measures to speed up the state’s vaccine rollout, Maryland health officials reported administering 9,491 more doses of the vaccine over the past 24 hours.
The state has now inoculated 86,733 people, approximately 1.4% of its population, part of a vaccination campaign currently focused on putting shots into the arms of front-line health care workers, nursing home residents and staff, and emergency responders.
Next in line for vaccinations will be those living in assisted living facilities and group homes. people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, educators, certain government employees and adults over 75 years old.
