Maryland reports 917 new COVID cases, 19 fatalities

BALTIMORE — After days of increasing slightly, the number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Maryland as well as the state’s COVID-19 testing positivity rate held steady Wednesday.

Here’s where the rest of the state’s pandemic-tracking statistics stood.

CASES

Maryland reported 917 new coronavirus cases, increasing the state’s case count to 395,633 since health officials began monitoring the disease more than a year ago.

DEATHS

Nineteen more Marylanders were reported dead from COVID-19 Wednesday, with the disease’s casualty count rising to 7,915 people in the state.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

The number of people hospitalized because of the disease held steady Wednesday at 805. However, the proportion of those hospitalized who required intensive care grew compared to a day earlier. About 226 patients were in intensive care, 13 more than the day before.

Hospitalizations had ticked up slightly for four days consecutively before Wednesday, though the figures were still less than half the pandemic peak of 1,952 hospitalized with the disease on Jan. 13.

More than 36,400 people have been hospitalized because of COVID-19 in the state since last March.

VACCINES

Maryland health officials reported 46,737 vaccines were administered across the state Wednesday. About 31,576 received an initial immunization of the two-dose vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna and 14,415 received their second dose. Just 746 people received one of the single-dose immunizations made by Johnson & Johnson.

Vaccinators in the state have shot almost 2 million immunizations into arms. Approximately 725,210 people have been fully vaccinated, almost 12% of the state’s population, and almost 1.27 million have received their preliminary immunization, nearly 21% of the state’s 6 million residents.

An average of 43,487 vaccine doses have been administered daily in Maryland over the last week.

TESTING POSITIVITY

Like hospitalizations, the state’s average testing positivity rate did not change over the last 24 hours, staying at 3.96%. The indicator, which measures the number of COVID-19 tests returned positive over the last week, had increased for six days in a row before leveling.

The state reported 24,617 tests for the disease were completed over the last 24 hours, and approximately 8.36 million swabs conducted since testing began last year.
