Maryland football players Lorenzo Harrison and DJ Turner will be arrested by campus police Wednesday for their involvement in a BB gun incident on campus on Nov. 6, the university announced.
The players, who are both freshmen and were high school teammates at nearby DeMatha, will be charged with three counts each of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, and one count each of threatening bodily harm while on university grounds.
Both players had been previously suspended indefinitely by the athletic department prior to Saturday's home loss to Ohio State. A third player, Antoine Brooks, who was also suspended, was not charged by police and has been reinstated for Saturday's game against Nebraska.
"We are aware of the situation and take these matters very seriously," Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a statement. "The two student-athletes involved have been suspended indefinitely for violating the student-athlete code of conduct. This matter has also been referred to the Office of Student Conduct for further review."
Harrison, the team's second-leading rusher who was just 57 yards shy of breaking the school's all-time freshman rushing record, and Turner, a backup wide receiver who played on special teams, were expected to be formally charged Wednesday.
The investigation began last week when three students told police that they had been hit by BB gun pellets.
One was riding his bike on Paint Branch Drive between the Kim Engineering and Biomolecular Science buildings. Two other students, a male and female, were hit while walking on the sidewalk along Stadium Drive between the Stadium Drive Garage and Ellicott Hall.
