Maryhill residents say woman's body may have 'lay for hours' before being found in Glasgow flat

Residents in a Glasgow street where a woman's body was found described the frightening moment dozens of police descended on the block of flats.

Detectives are probing the death of a 54-year-old woman after her body was discovered in a flat on Cumlodden Drive, in Maryhill.

Her death is being treated as suspicious.

Neighbours says they were frightened after watching a swarm of officers, followed by forensics teams surround the property on Tuesday night.

Locals say officers told them the woman may have lain in the property for a day before the grim discovery was made.

One neighbour said: “My friend lives in the flats, she said police were knocking on doors last night asking if anyone had seen anything the night before.

“The officer said they believe it may have happened the night before and she was discovered on Tuesday. It’s awful.”

Another spoke of the terrifying moment dozens of police swarmed onto the street.

They said: “We didn’t know anything had happened until all the police arrived.

“Then all of a sudden there were flashing lights everywhere.

“Forensics were here until late into the night and police have been there all morning.

And added: “It’s horrible this happening on our doorstep, terrifying.

“I don’t know the woman but I think she was on the ground floor.

“CID were going round knocking doors last night.”

A third resident said: "I went for a walk at about 6pm and there was police everywhere. I knew straightaway someone must have died, it's awful.

“They quickly taped up the area and weren’t letting anyone past, it was really scary.”

While another added: “For something like this to happen so close to home, we’re in shock. The poor woman".

Forensics experts are conducting a fingertip examination of the scene after detectives cordoned off the surrounding area last night.

A forensic tent has been placed outside a ground floor property at the block of flats.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed officers are treating the death as suspicious and enquiries remain ongoing.

A post portem will be carried out in due course to establish the cause of death.
