Maryhill mum flooded with sewage and left without electricity for two days

A Maryhill mum has slammed her housing association after she was left with no electricity and sewage seeping into her flat for more than two days.

Demi Somerville first noticed a 'brown drip' coming through the switch in the bathroom of her flat on Kelvindale Road on Monday evening before her electrics tripped and shut off.

By Tuesday morning, she was unable to enter her bathroom due to the floor being covered in 'brown smelly water' which had been pouring down from her lights.

After alerting the upstairs neighbour, she discovered that their toilet had been leaking 'for ages' but hadn't been seen to. After calling Maryhill Housing Association, she was told that a plumber would be sent out to the property, but he never arrived.

After being assured that a plumber had to be contacted three times, it transpired that they hadn't in fact sent for one and the family had to wait until 8pm for someone to come and look at the leak.

Demi told Glasgow Live: "The plumber went to the property up the stairs and came back down quite quickly. The exact words given to me were that he couldn't work in the conditions the woman's house was in as it was absolutely filthy with urine and poo.

"There were insects and flies everywhere so all he could do was clip her waste pipe into position temporarily to contain the leak until the housing came back out the next day.

"I had to phone the housing association again the next morning to explain that I still had no electricity and hadn't had any for two days, with two kids to look after and someone else's waste all over my bathroom."

Eventually, an electrician came out to the property and got the electricity on but said it was likely to go back off once the temporary leak stopped working.

Another plumber sent out to the property also walked off the job due to the living conditions of the woman upstairs.

The frustrated tenant added: "Her floorboards were soaked right threw with urine and sewage water and his boss advised him not to continue work.

"On Thursday I phoned the housing back explaining that what happened and the problem wasn’t solved - any time she uses the toilet the temporary fix will come away and I will be flooded with waste. I asked if they could send someone out to clean and fix this problem ASAP - I was told you will be called back.

"By the time it got to Friday, I had a sewage-stained ceiling and the drip had restarted."

Maryhill Housing Association says they have been out to the property and all be carrying out any work required to address the situation.

A spokesperson added: "Maryhill Housing staff have been working to address the issues raised by this customer which involved accessing another property. Our staff have since visited the customer at home and can confirm that the leak into her property has been addressed to her satisfaction. The electrics have also been checked and are in good working order.

"We have agreed with the customer that we will stain-block and repaint the bathroom ceiling where there was an ingress of water and replace the shower rail, which was damaged when dealing with the repair, as soon as possible.

"The customer advised that some minor household items were damaged due to the water ingress and we will be making an offer of redress in accordance with our procedure in relation to the cost of these."
