Police have arrested and charged a wanted man over drug offences after he spent weeks on the run.

Alan James Lace, 53, fled into bushland after police intercepted his car on the Bruce Highway at Maryborough just after midnight on June 19.

An immediate search of the area failed to find any sign of the man.

Lace was arrested yesterday on the Gold Coast and charged with several drug offences, including trafficking and possessing dangerous drugs, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and obstruct police.

Police had not been actively seeking the man when they intercepted his car last month.

During the search, a police dog named Rambo and his handler were tracking Lace along the highway when Rambo was killed by an oncoming car.

He was immediately taken to a nearby vet but could not be revived, sparking tributes for the dog online.

Lace was remanded in custody and will reappear in the Southport Magistrates Court in August.
