  • Legendary British athlete Mary Rand, the first British woman to win an Olympic track and field gold medal, has died at the age of 86.
  • Rand secured her historic gold in the long jump at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics with a world-record leap of 6.76m.
  • At the same Games, she also earned a pentathlon silver and a 4x100m relay bronze, becoming the only British female athlete to win three track and field medals in a single Olympics until Emma Finucane replicated the achievement in 2024.
