Mary Lou McDonald slams 'bigoted intimidation' of Leo Varadkar outside of his house

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has slammed the "homophobic, bigoted intimidation" outside of Tainiste Leo Varadkar's house on Sunday.

Far right protesters used homophobic language as they marched outside the Fine Gael leader's home at lunchtime on Sunday.

McDonald took to Twitter to condemn the incident and called for those involved to be held to account.

She said: "The homophobic, bigoted intimidation witnessed at the home of Leo Varadkar today is outrageous and shameful.

"The perpetrators must be held to account."

Social Democrats TD for Dublin Central Garry Gannon labelled the protest as "vile".

He said on Twitter: "What occurred outside Leo Varadkar’s house today was nothing short of vile.

"Blatant homophobia has no place in our Republic and should be confronted wherever it occurs."

Gardaí attended the far right protest on Sunday.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí were alerted to a number of protestors outside a residence in Dublin 8 this afternoon Sunday 19th September, 2021 at approximately 1p.m."

"Gardaí attended and the protest ended without incident."
